Get A List Of Applications Installed On An Ubuntu Server

If you’re building virtual server templates, creating system documentation, or just have a desire to know what you really have running on your Ubuntu Server you’ll eventually want to get a list of all installed applications. I haven’t had to use dpkg directly too much, but it’s a pretty handy utility from what I can see.

Run the following command to create a text file that lists off line-by-line which applications are installed:

dpkg —get-selections > installed-software

And while I haven’t tried this yet, apparently this is what you would run to re-install all those applications (With defaults) on a new install:

dpkg —set-selections < installed-software

Stay tuned for more! I plan on re-documenting my virtual machine info to show, over stages, what software is installed. My goal is to eventually trim it all down to the point I can use a minimal ubuntu installation and install exactly what I need…nothing less, nothing more.
